Edom at the Edge of Empire: A Social and Political History
Bradley L. Crowell
Ancient Edom is best known as the southeastern neighbor of Iron Age Judah that appears in the Hebrew Bible either as Israel’s sibling or its reviled enemy. Edom at the Edge of Empire offers an interdisciplinary approach to southern Levantine history that combines biblical, epigraphic, archaeological, and comparative evidence to reconstruct the history of a collection of nomadic tribes and workers in the Wadi Faynan as it relates to the later polity centered around the city of Busayra in the mountains of southern Jordan. This is the first book to incorporate the important evidence from the Wadi Faynan copper mines into a comprehensive account of Edom’s history, providing a key resource for students and scholars of the ancient Near East and the Hebrew Bible.

Impurity and Purification in Early Judaism and the Jesus Tradition
Thomas Kazen
This collection of twelve essays by Thomas Kazen focuses on issues of purity and purification in early Judaism and the Jesus tradition. During the late Second Temple period, Jewish purity practices became more prominent than before and underwent substantial developments. Kazen advances the ongoing conversation and debate about a number of key issues in the field, such as the relationship between ritual and morality, the role and function of metaphor, and the use of evolutionary and embodied perspectives.
Feminism, Queerness, Affect, and Romans: Under God?
Jimmy Hoke
In Feminism, Queerness, Affect, and Romans: Under God? Jimmy Hoke reads Romans with an innovative, intersectional approach that produces distinctive meanings for passages that probe how queer wo/men who first encountered Paul’s letter could have engaged with it. Hoke turns a feminist and queer gaze toward Paul’s conception of faith and ethics, making explicit how Paul’s theology throughout Romans has been affectively motivated by imperial notions of gender, race, and sexuality. By engaging affect theory, Hoke brings to life not only ideas and words but the feelings and sensations that moved in-between some of the earliest Christ-followers, revealing how queer wo/men were there among them and what that means for queer wo/men today.

David Lincicum, editor
The Christ Party in the Corinthian Community by Ferdinand Christian Baur (1792–1860), one of the founders of modern New Testament scholarship, is now available in English for the first time. In this ground-breaking work, Baur argued for a diversity of views in the earliest strata of the Christian tradition that shaped the modern study of Paul in lasting ways. In addition to Baur’s essay, this edition includes the first English translation of Ernst Käsemann’s introduction to Baur’s Historisch-kritische Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament.

The Struggle over Class: Socioeconomic Analysis of Ancient Christian Texts
G. Anthony Keddie, Michael Flexsenhar III, and Steven J. Friesen, editors
This volume brings together scholars from the fields of New Testament and early Christianity to examine Christian texts in light of the category of class. Historically rigorous and theoretically sophisticated, The Struggle over Class presents a range of approaches to, and applications of, class in the study of religious texts and communities. Essays examine the epistles, the gospels, Acts, apocalyptic texts, and patristic literature for what they reveal about the socioeconomic contexts of the Greco-Roman World.
