“Wordplay” in Ancient Near Eastern Texts
Scott B. Noegel
This book from Scott B. Noegel offers a comparative, in-depth study of “wordplay” in ancient Near Eastern texts. Noegel establishes comprehensive taxonomies for the many kinds of devices that scholars label as wordplay and for their proposed functions. The consistent terminology proposed offers students and scholars of Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ugaritic, Hebrew, and Aramaic a useful template for documenting and understanding the devices they discover and for comparing them across languages for a rich interdisciplinary dialogue.

Support SBL
This summer, we will release a few videos featuring the voices of several members as they discuss the Society and its contribution to the guild. Like many of our other media, these videos illustrate the multifarious identity of the Society of Biblical Literature. SBL is membership centered. We would accomplish very little without the support of our volunteers and donors. We encourage you to consider helping the Society meet its goals through a gift of your service and/or finances. Thanks so much for your contribution. #WeAreSBL
