New Snapshot of Practices and Perceptions related to Scholarly Communications and Information Usage

Results of the sixth iteration of the Ithaka S+R US Faculty Survey were just announced. The survey, a tool for tracking attitudes and self-reported practices of scholars on a variety of issues over time, focuses on how research, teaching, and information usage practices of faculty members are changing. Its population is a random sample of faculty members from all arts and sciences fields and most professions at colleges and universities in the United States that grant a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Key findings are listed on p. 6 of the PDF version of the report, which we summarize below.

  • Discovery starting points for faculty research remain in flux with strong use of specific electronic research resources/databases, general purpose search engines, and online library websites/catalogs.
  • Interest in supporting students and their competencies and learning outcomes shows signs of surging.
  • Faculty members prefer to be self-reliant in their data management and preservation processes.
  • There is no observable trend towards a format transition for monographs.
  • Traditional scholarly incentives continue to motivate behaviors around research and its dissemination.

The full report is available at https://www.sr.ithaka.org/publications/ithaka-sr-us-faculty-survey-2015/. SBL was a supporting organization for this survey.

Communication, Pedagogy, and the Gospel of Mark
Elizabeth E. Shively and Geert Van Oyen, editors
Using Mark as a test case, nine seasoned scholars apply their interpretative approaches to the art of teaching, sharing from their personal experience in the classroom. This resource enables biblical studies instructors to reflect on the relationship between research and teaching, to explore various interpretative approaches, and to begin to engage pedagogical issues in our changing world. Although framed as a test case on Mark, this book’s ideas may be adapted for teaching any biblical text, and by anyone who teaches the Bible in an academic context.
