Cundill Book Prize Call

Submissions for the seventh annual Cundill Prize in Historical Literature at McGill University are now being accepted until May 31, 2014. The Prize will grant one Grand Prize of US$75,000 and two 'Recognition of Excellence' Prizes of US$10,000.

The Cundill Prize is awarded each year by McGill University to an individual who has published a book written in English (or translated to English), determined to have had (or likely to have) a profound literary, social and academic impact in the area of history.

Publishers are invited once again, in addition to hard copy books, to submit an e-version of the book for the jury members’ convenience.

$2,500 Travel Prizes for Papers to Be Presented at SBL or ASOR

The Biblical Archaeology Society is offering two prizes of $2,500 each for travel expenses to present an academic paper at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) or the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), both to be held in San Diego in November. One prize will be awarded to a young scholar and another to an emeritus scholar. Both categories often fail to find institutional support.

The Hershel Shanks Prizes are supported as a legacy of the late Sami Rohr from his children. The decision to name the prizes after the BAR editor was made at the insistence of Mr. Rohr, a leading Florida philanthropist. Mr. Rohr's three children likewise insisted on naming the prize after the BAR editor because "that is what our father wanted."

Professions News

The AAUP recently released its Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession. Note especially a supplemental data report entitled The Employment Status of Instructional Staff Members in Higher Education, Fall 2011, which compiles fall 2011 IPEDS data on employment status and provides breakouts by institutional categories, gender, and race or ethnicity. This report adds to the 2010 CAW survey in efforts to develop comprehensive national data on working conditions, careers, and compensation of academics in contingent appointments.

An Interview with John Langfitt, SBL Member since 1970

In the fall of 2013 John Langfitt contacted Navar Steed, SBL’s Membership Services Manager. John had discovered that his society membership had expired several years before. He didn’t just want to renew his membership, however. He wanted to correct the oversight and insisted that he pay dues for the years his membership had lapsed. John had joined SBL in 1970 and wanted his record to show continuous membership to the present day.
