International Meeting

The 2012 SBL International Meeting, held in conjunction with the 2012 annual conference of the European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS) and the triennial joint meeting of the Oudtestamentisch Werkgezelschap in Nederland en België (OTW) and the Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS), was a resounding success! Such success would not have been possible without the SBL staff and a number of other key partners.

  • Our host, the University of Amsterdam, provided an excellent setting for the meeting. Thanks are due to Rector Magnificus, Professor Dymph van de Boom, the president of the UvA board, Karel van der Toorn, and Director of the Graduate School for Humanities, Jan Willem van Henten.
  • Jorunn Økland and Ronit Nikolsky of EABS continue their outstanding work. We are thrilled to partner with EABS in part because of their collegial spirits.
  • Pierre Van Hecke of OTW and George Brooke of SOTS facilitated the momentous opportunity of a joint meeting among four organizations. Their partnership and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated.

The opening session, held in the university's beautiful Aula, signaled the vitality of biblical scholarship not only in Amsterdam and the Netherlands but across the world. Representatives of EABS, OTW, SOTS, and SBL affirmed this year's partnership, which resulted in nearly 900 attendees from 46 countries across 6 continents. These attendees presented, listened, and dialogued in almost 200 sessions. They also benefited from tours at the Bijbels Museum and the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, as well as entrance to the Jewish Historical Museum and Portuguese Synagogue. We are grateful to the many persons who made this meeting a success and hope you will join us in St. Andrews, United Kingdom, July 7-11, 2013, for the next SBL International Meeting.

Visit the NEH at booth 900 in the Annual Meetings Exhibit Hall. Stop by to talk with a program officer about grant opportunities.

The National Endowment for the Humanities offers grants to scholars and others engaged in humanistic research and teaching. Twenty-six grant programs support individuals, teams, and institutions doing work for other scholars, students, or the general public. Fundable projects include research for monographs, scholarly editions, creating or revising a class, preserving or digitizing archival collections, professional development for teachers, museum exhibits and documentaries. The NEH has a long record of supporting important scholarship in religious studies, including a variety of disciplinary approaches and religious traditions. Daniel Sack, a NEH program officer (and AAR member), will be available at the annual meetings in November to talk about grant programs and possible applications. Visit the NEH booth (#900) in the exhibit hall or write dsack@neh.gov. More information on the NEH and grant programs is at neh.gov.

RTI Training Program for Scholars

The University of Southern California's West Semitic Research Project has received grants from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to establish a Training Program in advanced imaging technologies for the documentation of ancient texts and artifacts with an initial emphasis on Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). The IMLS and the Mellon Foundation have also funded the purchase of imaging equipment to support the Training Program.

The objective of this project is to develop an infrastructure for training scholars in the use of RTI technology and subsequently to lend the necessary imaging equipment to participants in the training program so they can do an initial RTI documentation project either in field environments (archaeological sites, etc.) or in libraries, museums and/or other similar venues, worldwide. This initial undertaking should be understood to be a pilot project that can develop into an ongoing, broader documentary effort and preferably may also serve as the catalyst for establishing a consortial network for image documentation of a given corpus (or corpora) of ancient texts and/or artifacts. All equipment to be lent out is both rugged and compact and is thus ideal for doing sophisticated imaging in remote locations. Twenty-four awards over three years (approximately eight per year) for traineeships will be provided based on the merit and intrinsic importance of a proposed pilot imaging project as well as the appropriateness of the subject matter for RTI imaging.

This symposium, at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Jena (Germany), explores the latest inner-biblical revisions affectingthe conception of the history of the early monarchy in Israel. Thefocus will be on the books of Samuel and 1 Chronicles. Can 1 Chr beunderstood as a relecture of 1-2 Sam? If so, did its existence asa parallel account of 1-2 Sam give rise to literary feedback intoits source? And, finally, how can these presumable"post-chronistic" traces be identified?

During the meeting general questions of the relationship between1-2 Sam and 1 Chr are addressed as well as methodological issueswhich are challenged by a number of case studies.

12/12-12/14 The Panoply of Judaisms in the 1st-3rd Centuries (Christians, Rabbis and Synagogues)
This international meeting will happen at the Institute of the Biblical Sciences (University of Lausanne, CH) and is co-organized by Claire Clivaz, Simon Mimouni and Bernard Pouderon.

Speakers will be: Marie-Françoise Baslez, Ra'anan Boustan, Bogdan Bucur, Claire Clivaz, José Costa, Jörg Frey, Emmanuel Friedheim, David Hamidovic, Hervé Inglebert, Daniel Marguerat, Simon Mimouni, Ron Naiweld, Etienne Nodet, Bernard Pouderon, Annette Yoshiko Reed, Benjamin Bertho, Simon Butticaz, Charlotte Touati.

The profound change that research is currently undergoing demands a shift in thinking about all forms of Judaism, not just the rabbinic or Christian movements but also synagogue Judaism. For several centuries, both the Christians and the Rabbis 'attempted' to achieve a Utopian unity, as improbable as it is impossible, by defining their boundaries in terms of notions such as heresy and canon. In so doing, they each diminished the influence of synagogue Judaism and in places smoothed it over to the point of apparently effacing it forever. It is in the light of these changes in perspective that the organisers of this colloquium would like to reconsider all the forms of Judaism after 70CE , with the aim of taking stock of the increasingly numerous shifts occurring in this area of high-level research.
