Student Participation Policies

The Executive Committee of Council met on 12 January 2011 to discuss concerns over the recent policies regarding student participation in the Society’s Annual Meeting. The policies that were announced in November 2010 required all students without a doctoral degree to submit to the Program Unit Chair the full text of the paper they intended to read and limited the number of sessions student can participate in (as panelist, presenter, and respondent) to one.

The action taken by the Executive Committee of Council, effective immediately, is to postpone the implementation of these policies and to undertake additional discussion of these matters at the Spring 2011 Council meeting. This action thereby removes these requirements and restrictions until 2012, pending further review.

Members are encouraged to continue to make their views known to the Student Advisory Board and the On-campus Student Representatives. SAB will provide a report directly to Council in April.

Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award:
Congratulations to Professor Musa Dube, Associate Professor at the University of Botswana, who has been elected to receive a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation.

Scientists and scholars, internationally renowned in their field, who completed their doctorates less than 18 years ago and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements that will have a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work, are eligible to be nominated by established German academics for the award. Award winners are honored for their outstanding research record, granted a monetary award, and invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany.

Musa Dube’s research and writing is focused on postcolonial feminist interpretations of the Bible. She has contributed much to the study of religion through her teaching in the academy as well as through serving as an HIV/AIDS and theological consultant for churches and theological institutions of Africa, training theological lecturers and church leaders to mainstream HIV/AIDS and gender issues in their programs. A long-time member of SBL, Prof. Dube has served on the editorial board of Semeia and as Program Unit Chair of the African Biblical Hermeneutics Section. She also edited the volume Other Ways of Reading: African Women and the Bible, a co-publication of SBL and the World Council of Churches.

International Cooperative Initiative News

Read how one SBL member is taking advantage of the ICI Scholarly Exchange program to bring international scholars into her classroom.

"...Three biblical scholars from outside of North America who are participants in the ICI program and willing to teach via electronic media were especially important in providing my students with an international perspective and, I think, expanding my students’ horizons vis-à-vis the Bible. Thanks to the ICI program and videoconferencing, my students were able to meet and learn from Milton Acosta, Professor of Bible and Theology at the Fundación Universitaria Seminario Biblico in Medellin, Colombia, Christo Lombaard, Professor of Christian Spirituality of the University of South Africa in Pretoria, and Prof. Revelation Velunta, Professor of New Testament and Cultural Studies at Union Theological Seminary, Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines. Students at St. Edward’s University benefited from the presentations of Profs. Acosta, Lombaard, and Velunta, as each commands different areas of expertise within biblical studies. At the same time, these biblical scholars are masterful teachers who also brought new vistas to my students and their encounter with the Bible."
