Humanities Advocacy Day 2010

Humanities Advocacy Day (HAD), held March 8-9, 2010, was a great success.

Panel presentations during the morning program on “The State of the Humanities” and “Humanities in Public Policy” brought together numerous figures to discuss topics such as trends in funding and the academic workforce and the role that the humanities can play in shaping and contributing to critical public policy issues.

As challenges to the U.S. educational system in a global context and higher education in general mount, HAD reminds us of the need to advocate for a well-balanced approach to education that is both multi- and inter-disciplinary, inclusive of the arts, sciences, and humanities. Through its participation in HAD and various activities and initiatives throughout the year, SBL pursues a course to foster biblical scholarship—both by reminding legislators of the work we do and by forming relationships with other learned societies; indeed, as Kent Richards shared in the 2009 Society Report, "biblical studies resides in a wide humanistic environment of give and take." The challenge that remains (and which has been written about elsewhere) is how to answer the question: how is biblical studies relevant in the 21st century?

Your work and participation in the Society are answering this question.
